Is Jesus Enough?

I know, the title seems to be a question leading to heresy. But I wonder sometimes if Christians living in our society and the prevailing hedonistic culture can really say yes to this question. I have no doubt about Jesus being the only way to our eternal salvation. I totally believe the words Jesus used in John 14:6 when He emphatically said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” The Savior’s argument is an absolute statement that either has to be accepted or rejected; He doesn’t leave a person any middle ground.

Having said that, I do wonder if Christians across this great nation really believe He is enough to live life on. I was saved during the Jesus Movement in the mid-70’s. We were called “born-againers,” “Jesus Freaks,” and a lot of other names that are unprintable here. But, I’ll be honest with you, I cannot remember the last time I was called a freak for Jesus, or a fanatic, or even mistook for someone who has escaped the asylum. Some of Jesus’ followers call Him crazy (Mark 3:21). They said He was out of His mind.

Maybe my problem, not unlike other Christians in America, is that I have become comfortable blending into the social scenery so well that the unsaved section of our society cannot tell whether or not Jesus is enough. I don’t know about you, but that’s scary. I know I didn’t start out that way. I remember when Jesus was everything… He was more than enough! As a matter of fact, I remember when He was all I needed, wanted, or desired, and that’s why people I worked with called me a divine freak.

It is not my point in this blog to give you three spiritual principles (the equivalent of three points and a poem) to show you that Jesus is enough. I am pretty sure you already know that. But what I do want to know is why you feel Jesus is enough. Is Jesus all you need for life and godliness? Have you fixed your eyes on Him who is the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2)? Do people see Jesus when they see you or do they see a camouflage version, like Real Tree camo where you really cannot tell the forest from the trees?

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

This is Pastor Whalen wishing you joy in Jesus!
